Bonny Doon
2000 Cardinal Zin "Beastly Old Vines"

Appellation: Sacramento Delta Area, CA

Review Date : 2002-06-21

Winebork Rating = 89

Tasting Notes

The 2000 Cardinal Zin is 77% Zinfandel, mostly centenary vines from Contra Costa County with a little scosh of old vine fruit from Mendocino, and 23% Carignane. This Carignane comes from 100+ year old vines in Contra Costa and is the same fruit as their 2000 Carignane Old vines bottling. It has a superb nose with cherry, spice, pepper, and oak. Lots going on here with flavors of plum and oak and mild tannin. Fun on the tongue; this wine rocks.

Bought a case of this wine and, even being a big Bonny Doon and Zin fan, ended up using it for host/hostess gifts. The Zin is fine and the label is lots of fun, but to my taste has a steely edge and is bit shallow -- misses the berries and pepper of the top Zins.
